When Lavarez the Soviet scientist searched for tonics to improve the performance of Russia's elite personell he began by researching a synthetic chemical, dibazol, to improve organisms' abilities under stress. His colleague, Brekhman, convinced him to shift the focus of his research from synthetic chemicals to plants. The Russian scientists studied four-thousand plants and called twelve 'adaptogens', a word from Latin and Greek words; the majority of the research was done on ginseng, eleuthero, rhodiola, rhaponticum and schisandra.
