Reactive Hypoglycemia

Eaten sugar is turned into blood sugar soon after it reaches the intestines. Unlike complex carbohydrates, sugar causes a rapid rise in blood sugar (complex carbohydrates cause a gradual increase in blood sugar) which can cause the pancreas to secrete so much insulin the blood sugar level drops below normal; 'hypoglycemia' means low blood sugar - when blood sugar levels drop below normal in response to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), it is called 'reactive hypoglycemia'

Symptoms of hypoglycemia include dizziness, headache, blunted mental acuity, emotional instability, confusion and abnormal behavior. In two studies by S.J. Schoenthaler incarcerated juveniles had much lower rates of disruptive and anti-social behavior when placed on a sugar-restricted diet.
