Opium, Alcohol and Neurotransmitters

Opium works by directly stimulating the endorphin neuroreceptors. Opium users need more and more opium because it de-sensitizes the endorphin receptors by overstimulating them.

Alcohol increases the amount of endorphin neurotransmitters released (which de-sensitizes the endorphin receptors) but not the amount made (leading to a shortage of endorphin neurotransmitter). Alcohol physically shrinks the brain and also damages the heart, liver and intestines.

Safe is SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine) supplementation. Our bodies use SAMe to make neurotransmitters. Our bodies make SAMe from the amino acid methionine; however, without the vitamins and minerals needed to make SAMe the body may stop at turning methionine into homocysteine - high homocysteine is linked to heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer's, cancer and diabetes.
