nutrition 5: Co-enzyme Q10, Phosphatidyl Serine, and Ginkgo Extract

Ubiquinone, commonly called co-enzyme Q10, is a rate-limiting nutrient for the cellular production of energy; due to its chemical properties it is also an anti-oxidant. Older people and people taking statin drugs need a lot more of it. Because it is essential for the production of energy, the heart will stop if the heart cells run out of it. The body's ability to convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol . There is a body of research supporting the efficacy of ubiquinol therapy for many of the conditions ubiquinone is used to treat. Unlike ubiquinone, ubiquinol is water soluble which makes it better absorbed.

Phosphatidyl serine is a memory rejuvenator - it slows and reverses at senility and may ameliorate non-age-related decline in memory. It is also used to increase rate of recovery from exercise and decrease the rise in cortisol induced by physical training.

Ginkgo extract has achieved remarkable results in slowing and reversing the onset of dementia. Its been reported to make some people paranoid, but dementia patients for whom it is effective are less confused for taking it. However, because its an anti-coagulant (blood thinner) it increases patients' risks of hemorrhagic stroke during its anti-coagulant effect.
