Sensors and Actuators: Their Importance for Walking Robots and Race Cars

As sensors and actuators improve, robots will need less energy to move. In this context, sensors detect forces acting on parts of the robot and actuators compensate for such forces. Robotic legs must have many actuators that work together to achieve stability and precision, decreasing the amount of energy needed to compensate for external forces changing the positions of such machines' parts. Every time you execute an action, you must expend energy getting into the position to do the action in addition to performing the action itself. Sensors and actuators can reduce the amount of energy expended getting into position to perform movements.

Sensing and actuating have become essential for winning car races: http://www.ted.com/talks/view/lang/eng//id/1137
