The Particle Zoo and The Meson Gun

Long after the photon, electron, neutron, and proton were well understood, physicists were still writing papers about new particles. The meson was one such particle.

Mesons were predicted by the theoretical physicist Hideki Yukawa in 1935 and first observed in 1946. The observed mesons were found in cosmic rays, and it was not until 1948 that mesons were made in a lab.

The 'meson gun' describes the concept of a weapon that works by accelerating pi nuetral mesons. It is particularly unique because mesons can pass through entire planets, leaving them practically unscathed before exploding by radio-active decay. Meson guns require an advanced targeting system which calculates the velocity necessary to launch mesons such that the bulk of them gamma the target.
