Social Masks

In 1992 a counselor helped nineteen-year-old Beth Rutherford to remember during therapy that her father had regularly raped her between the ages of seven and fourteen. Rutherford developed memories of her father twice impregnating her and forcing her to abort the fetus herself with a coat hanger. The father had to resign from his post as a clergyman when the allegations were made public. Later medical examination of the daughter revealed, however, that she was still a virgin at age 22 and had never been pregnant.1

The entire recollection of the rape experience turned out to be an auto-constructed social mask, an auto-potentiated synaptically programmed response to stimuli. This is not to say there aren't some masks that are intrinsic to our evolutionary biopsychologies and cannot be reduced to culturally relative neural circuits. But can you feel the heavy ish from the other side, looking at it as a symbolism that is auspicious insofar as it is knowledge, as a coherence of the chaos that truly is?
