When we respect and prepare our brains, we are more able to avert crises as a society.

The illusion of free will is the result of the relationships among parts of the brain. Specifically, the frontal lobe is responsible for 'executive functioning' including delaying gratification1. It helps control the basal ganglia and limbic system. Unsurprisingly, it is inhibited by hypoglycemia2 and especially alcohol3.

Competence is not purely social, but it is something active in degrees. It helps you understand the situation and communicate with others who may know or inspire critical details.
